Sylmar, meaning “sea of trees,” has been called “The Top of Los Angeles.” A neighborhood rich with history and culture, Sylmar's past can be traced to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission. It is home to the oldest nonsectarian cemetery in San Fernando Valley, San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, whose first recorded burial is in 1892.

Sylmar’s Cascades is an ornamental spillway that marks the end of the Los Angeles Aqueduct system and carries water from nearly 340 miles away. It is also home to the Nethercutt Collection, a free museum with one of the finest antique automobile collections and The Stetson Ranch Equestrian Park, one of the few equestrian parks in Los Angeles city. Sylmar is also known for its plethora of olive orchards -- where its production can trace its history back to the eighteenth century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission.
