Communications Director


The Office of Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez is seeking a Communications Director to lead the Councilwoman’s external communications, digital media, and strategic messaging work. The job provides candidates the opportunity to engage in the communication and legislative process while working on the most pressing issues facing the City of Los Angeles. The 7th Council District includes the communities of Pacoima, Sylmar, Mission Hills, North Hills, Lake View Terrace, Shadow Hills, La Tuna Canyon, Sunland and Tujunga.

The Communications Director will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the communications strategy for the full range of community programming and projects for the Council Office. Responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as a spokesperson for the Councilwoman and Council Office, and the point of contact to media partners
  • Serve as a member of the Council Office’s Senior Staff team, overseeing the policy, communications, and operations of the office
  • Manage and provide oversight to the communications team
  • Organize press conferences and prepare the Councilwoman for interviews with the media
  • Create and disseminate press releases, statements, and other timely public information
  • Manage and build relationships with members of the press
  • Manage assigned staff to execute an integrated communications strategy that includes outreach to (English and Spanish) media, mail, digital tactics to reach constituents in Council District 7
  • Oversee all marketing activities and social media programs
  • Oversee all external communications, including the development of newsletters, op-eds, fact sheets, talking points, and flyers

The ideal candidate possesses an enthusiasm for making meaningful, sustainable change in Los Angeles. The candidate is an excellent storyteller and creative outside-of-the-box thinker, ready to work in a high-energy and openly collaborative work environment.

  • 5-7 years of work experience in communications, media relations or a related field
  • Experience managing a team in a fast-paced environment
  • A strong storyteller and expert communicator, verbal and written
  • Has experience serving as a spokesperson
  • Has experience with crisis communications
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments at once, work quickly and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Fluency in reading and writing Spanish is strongly preferred
  • Has existing relationships with media partners in Los Angeles
  • Experience with social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Nextdoor)
  • Experience working with Google tools and Slack
