Sunland-Tujunga

Sunland-Tujunga was originally developed as an agricultural community and was once home to the Tongva Native Americans. Today, this neighborhood's rustic atmosphere is still widely felt and celebrated. The word ‘Tujunga’, in fact, means "the old woman" in the native Tongva language, referring to the idea of a nurturing Mother Nature. This neighborhood has an eclectic history, known simultaneously for its clean air, utopian communities, and local artists and poet laureates.

Sunland-Tujunga is home to both Mount Lukens, the highest elevation point in Los Angeles, and to the Tujunga Wash, the largest natural floodplain in Southern California. The Big Tujunga Canyon offers several beautiful hikes and views of nature. Sunland-Tujunga’s location near the Angeles National Forest also provides countless opportunities for outdoor recreation. The town has been a popular filming location for films and shows such as Ben Hur, Tarzan, All the King’s Men, Teen Wolf, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Memento, and Sons of Anarchy.

Sylmar

Sylmar, meaning “sea of trees,” has been called “The Top of Los Angeles.” A neighborhood rich with history and culture, Sylmar's past can be traced to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission. It is home to the oldest nonsectarian cemetery in San Fernando Valley, San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery, whose first recorded burial is in 1892.

Sylmar’s Cascades is an ornamental spillway that marks the end of the Los Angeles Aqueduct system and carries water from nearly 340 miles away. It is also home to the Nethercutt Collection, a free museum with one of the finest antique automobile collections and The Stetson Ranch Equestrian Park, one of the few equestrian parks in Los Angeles city. Sylmar is also known for its plethora of olive orchards -- where its production can trace its history back to the eighteenth century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission.

The 7th Council District is home to one of the few remaining agricultural zones in the City and celebrated rural lifestyle. Its relaxed and rural pace makes Shadow Hills an attractive neighborhood to call home for many in the Northeast San Fernando Valley. In addition, Shadow Hills is one of the last remaining neighborhoods in the City to be primarily equestrian-zoned.

North Hills was originally an agricultural community known as 'Mission Acres'. After World War II, the newly developed suburban community was renamed 'Sepulveda' until the latter 1990s when it was named 'North Hills'. Today North Hills is comprised of two unique sub-neighborhoods, North Hills West and North Hills East, whose neighborhood councils work closely together to improve the overall quality of life in North Hills communities. North Hills is home to the Veterans Administration Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center campus, which serves veterans in the San Fernando Valley.

Pacoima

Mural of Assata Shakur by Kristy Sandoval

Pacoima is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the northern San Fernando Valley. A portion of Van Nuys Boulevard in Pacoima is designated "Mural Mile", with more than 50 beautiful murals representing Pacoima’s diverse cultures in a three-mile radius. Pacoima is also the birthplace of musician Ritchie Valens, and a mural is painted in his honor at the intersection of Van Nuys Boulevard and Amboy Avenue. I encourage you to stop by my office at Pacoima City Hall, 13520 Van Nuys Blvd., Pacoima, CA 91331 -- a local destination for community gatherings and events including Pacoima's annual Dia de Los Muertos Festival, LAPD Cadet Training and Graduation, and neighborhood movie nights.

Mission Hills

Posted on Neighborhoods by Ron Smith · September 28, 2017 11:00 AM

Mission Hills, named for the Spanish Mission San Fernando Rey de España, is home to some of the most historic sites in San Fernando Valley. Andrés Pico Adobe, built in 1834, is the oldest residence in the San Fernando Valley, and the second oldest residence in Los Angeles. Brand Park, also called Memory Garden, is a part of the original land grant of Mission San Fernando Rey de España, and the colorful and picturesque atmosphere of the early California missions is preserved in Memory Garden. Memory Garden is a popular Valley destination for weddings and quinceañeras. Nearby is the San Fernando Mission Cemetery, one of the oldest active cemeteries in the San Fernando Valley.

Lake View Terrace, once known as Rancho Tujunga, was one of the original Spanish land grants in the San Fernando Valley. Opportunities for outdoor recreation abound in this area with parks, recreation centers, golf courses, and equestrian trails. It is home to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, Hansen Dam Swim Lake, and the Discovery Cube Los Angeles. It also home to Monte Verde Ranch, one of the few destinations in the City of LA that offer year-round horseback rides to the public.

Early settlement of the area, which was originally called Tujunga Terrace, began in the 1870’s followed by homesteading in 1902. In 1948, the community was renamed Lake View Terrace, reflecting its location overlooking the then water-filled Hansen Dam.

La Tuna Canyon

Posted on Neighborhoods by Ron Smith · September 28, 2017 10:09 AM

La Tuna Canyon provides its residents with many opportunities for outdoor activities. The 1,100-acre La Tuna Canyon Park located in the Verdugo Mountains has great hiking trails and panoramic views of Los Angeles. La Tuna Canyon is also home to the La Tuna Canyon Detention Center Monument, which remembers the Japanese, Italian, and German Americans detained during World War II.

On Friday, September 1, 2017, a wildfire broke out in La Tuna Canyon burning nearly 8,000 acres. This was the largest wildfire in the City of Los Angeles in 50 years. Thanks to the leadership of the Los Angeles City Fire Department and its partners across the State, the fire was finally 100% contained on Saturday, September 9, 2017.
