Weekly Newsletter (July 7, 2018) Improving Fire Response Times: Adding Services to CD 7

Here's a quick recap of what's happening in the Seventh Council District this week:

Improving Fire Response Times: Adding Services to CD 7

I'm proud to announce the addition of twelve new fire personnel at Fire Station 75 in Mission Hills, further restoring engine services to an area that has been operating with reduced capacity since 2011 budget cuts. The added staffing will increase deployment and improve response times in the Mission Hills area and supplement fire services in Sylmar -- the largest service area in Los Angeles. Engine services will begin on Sunday, July 8, 2018. The funding to restore resources at Fire Station 75 was acquired through the Staffing for Adequate Fire Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant that was awarded to the City by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Addressing the Rise in Senior Homelessness

This week, I introduced legislation instructing City agencies to report back to the City Council regarding senior homelessness. Although the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority's (LAHSA) 2018 Point-In-Time Homeless Count revealed a five percent decrease in homelessness, it also saw a 26% increase in senior homelessness. My motion calls for a full assessment of actions the City is taking as part of the Comprehensive Homeless Strategy and any additional recommendations to help prioritize programs in the City and County geared towards preventing seniors from falling into homelessness.

Prioritizing Public Safety and Increasing Patrols

I moved additional funding to LAPD Foothill and Mission Divisions for increased patrol around the Seventh District this summer. The additional patrol will enhance public safety, improve the quality of life, and reduce crime in the Northeast San Fernando Valley.

Beetlejuice Movie Night

Join me on Friday, July 13th for a screening of Beetlejuice as part of our FREE Summer Movie Nights Series. Catch a glimpse of the afterlife and experience a movie that feels as original today as it did three decades ago. Just before the movie, we will be hosting a Beetlejuice costume contest! Pack a picnic, blankets, lawn chairs, and enjoy a movie night under the stars.

Check out this sweet ride: a 1952 Chrysler Imperial Parade Phaeton, one of only three in the country. I hope you and your family had a safe and fun Fourth of July celebration. I had a great time celebrating at the Sunland-Tujunga Fourth of July parade. Thank you to the Sunland-Tujunga Rotary Club for keeping the annual tradition of the parade alive. This year, I was also proud to partner with the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce to provide a FREE fireworks show for the community.
